Gemini API Adds Per-Project Monthly Spend Caps in AI Studio

· Updated

Google AI Studio launched Project Spend Caps for the Gemini API, letting developers set a monthly dollar limit per project. Once configured, a cap stays active until manually changed — with up to a 10-minute activation delay and overages during that window remaining the developer's responsibility. Google also overhauled usage tiers: lower spend qualifications for higher tiers, automatic upgrades as usage and payment history mature, and billing account-level caps that scale with tier progression.

Per-project spend control addresses the gap where account-wide limits aren't granular enough for multi-project setups. Google notes this is particularly useful for accounts managing multiple projects with different budgets. The usage tier overhaul complements this by automating progression rather than requiring manual steps to unlock higher rate limits.

Set a monthly budget ceiling per Gemini API project in your AI Studio account — useful when running multiple apps or experimenting across projects with different cost tolerances.
