Devin Gains Native Windows Support to Automate Enterprise Desktop Engineering

Cognition, an applied AI lab building end-to-end software agents, launched native Windows support for Devin, its autonomous AI software engineer. The update provides dedicated Windows virtual machines where the agent can natively execute toolchains like MSBuild, IIS, and PowerShell. This follows the recent Android emulator support for mobile engineering.
Supported toolchains
MSBuild, IIS, PowerShell, and more
Security compliance
SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001
Environment type
Isolated, ephemeral Windows VMs
Key capability
Computer Use for GUI testing
Availability
Rolling out over 24 hours

While most AI coding agents are optimized for Linux-based web development, Windows remains the backbone of enterprise infrastructure. By operating within a native Windows environment, Devin can now tackle complex architectural refactors previously inaccessible to cloud-based agents. This shift mirrors the industry-wide move toward Windows-based legacy app automation.

You can now delegate Windows-specific workflows to Devin, such as migrating .NET Framework applications to .NET 8. The agent uses computer use to launch applications and click through interfaces to verify code changes. Access is rolling out to existing customers over the next 24 hours.

Still wondering? A few quick answers below.

Devin for Windows is an expansion of Cognition's autonomous AI software engineer that allows it to operate natively within Windows virtual machines. This environment enables the agent to build, run, and test applications using Windows-specific toolchains like MSBuild, SQL Server, and PowerShell, which are essential for many enterprise software projects.

Devin uses a capability called computer use to interact directly with the Windows graphical user interface. It can launch applications it has built and then click, type, and navigate through the UI just like a human engineer would. This allows the agent to verify that new features or migrations work correctly in a real desktop environment.

Devin is compatible with a wide range of native Windows toolchains and services. This includes build systems like MSBuild, web servers like IIS, and database management through SQL Server. By working inside the environment these systems depend on, Devin can manage complex tasks like migrating legacy .NET Framework applications to modern .NET 8.

Cognition has built Devin for Windows with enterprise-grade security and governance controls. Each session runs in an isolated, ephemeral virtual machine to ensure data privacy. The platform is SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 compliant, supports single sign-on and role-based access control, and does not use customer code for model training.

Access to Windows virtual machines is rolling out to existing Devin customers over a 24-hour window starting May 21, 2026. Users can sign up to try the new Windows capabilities through the official Devin website, where they can also explore case studies of the agent performing large-scale migrations for major enterprise clients.
