Windsurf 2.0 Launches Cloud Delegation to Devin for Autonomous Background Coding

Windsurf 2.0 introduces the Agent Command Center and deep integration with Devin, an autonomous AI software engineer. Users can now delegate complex coding tasks to cloud-based agents that continue executing even after the local IDE is closed. This shift moves AI coding from real-time assistance to persistent, asynchronous task completion.

Windsurf, an agentic IDE (an editor designed for AI-driven development) owned by Cognition, released version 2.0 featuring deep integration with the Devin autonomous agent. The update introduces the Agent Command Center and Spaces, allowing users to manage multiple agents and project contexts from a single interface.

This release marks a transition from local AI assistance to persistent cloud execution. While traditional coding assistants require an active session, Devin runs in a dedicated virtual machine (a software-based computer environment) in the cloud. This allows agents to handle long-running tasks independently, solving the bottleneck of synchronous interaction.

You can now plan a task locally and delegate execution to Devin with one click. The agent will continue writing, testing, and shipping code even if you go offline or close your laptop. The capability is included in all Windsurf plans and is accessible by updating the IDE.
