Cognition launches Devin Desktop to orchestrate fleets of AI agents

Cognition has released Devin Desktop, a rebranding of the Windsurf IDE that acts as a command center for managing fleets of AI agents. The environment integrates Devin into a local editor to delegate tasks across multiple agents. It adds support for the Agent Client Protocol (a protocol for inter-agent communication), allowing third-party agents to work in one unified view.

This update builds on Windsurf by shifting to a multi-agent orchestration layer. By supporting parallel agents in cloud virtual machines, the platform handles complex tasks through specialized sub-agents. It enables a hybrid workflow where local tasks hand off to persistent cloud environments that continue running after the laptop closes.

Devin Desktop is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with existing Windsurf settings migrating automatically. Developers can also use the JetBrains plugin or Devin CLI. The platform remains free, offering a full IDE experience alongside new agent management tools like the Agent Command Center and Kanban views.

Still wondering? A few quick answers below.

Devin Desktop is the new name for the Windsurf IDE, evolved into a command center for managing multiple AI agents. While it retains the full IDE experience, the interface is now optimized for orchestrating fleets of local and cloud-based agents from a single surface.

The transition occurs via a standard over-the-air update, meaning all existing plans, pricing, extensions, and settings carry over automatically. Users can also manually download the latest version for macOS, Windows, or Linux to initiate the migration of their current development environment.

The Agent Client Protocol is an open standard that enables different AI agents to communicate and coordinate on tasks. By supporting ACP, Devin Desktop allows developers to integrate and manage third-party agents alongside Devin, creating a unified view for multi-agent engineering workflows.
