Midjourney V8.1 is now live, offering native 2K HD rendering that is three times faster and cheaper than the previous V8 release. The update restores essential features like image prompts and the Describe command while introducing new moodboards and style references for better creative control.

Midjourney, an AI image generation platform, launched V8.1 to move the model out of its alpha phase. The release introduces native 2K HD rendering—generating high-resolution images directly without upscaling—that is 3x faster and 3x cheaper than V8. Standard 1K generation is now faster than the previous V7 draft mode.

This update addresses the high cost of quality that previously slowed down professional workflows. By making high-resolution output the default speed and price point, the platform removes the friction between creative iteration and final production. The return of iconic aesthetics ensures users can maintain established artistic styles without technical compromises.

Use the Describe command to reverse-engineer prompts and apply new moodboards or srefs (Style References) for consistent branding. Prompts longer than 256 characters are now automatically optimized by an internal language model to improve adherence. These features are available now via the web interface and Discord.
