OpenClaw adds plugin approval hooks to secure autonomous AI tool calls

· Updated

OpenClaw released version 2026.3.28, featuring an async requireApproval hook for plugins. This allows tools to pause and prompt users via platform-native buttons or a new /approve command. The framework also supports the xAI Responses API, enabling first-class x_search capabilities and automated onboarding for Grok models.

As agents move from chat to autonomous execution, the risk of unvetted actions increases. Standardizing human-in-the-loop interactions provides a critical safety layer for self-hosted environments. New ACP binds for Discord and iMessage also streamline orchestration, turning existing chats into persistent workspaces without creating fragmented threads.

Implement these safeguards by updating your instance and configuring the before_tool_call hook in plugins. The release also adds MiniMax image-01 support for multimodal workflows and fixes messaging loops on WhatsApp. This open-source update is available now, though Qwen users must migrate to Model Studio API keys.
