OpenAI Retires Early GPT 5 Models From Codex ChatGPT Login

· Updated

OpenAI is deprecating six older models from Codex for users who authenticate using ChatGPT credentials. Starting April 14, the web interface will no longer support gpt-5, gpt-5.1, or the early gpt-5.2-codex variants. Instead, the platform will default to the more recent gpt-5.4 and gpt-5.3-codex iterations.

This update marks a rapid narrowing of the GPT model lifecycle, as versions released earlier in the year are already being classified as legacy. Removing these models from the login interface shifts the default experience toward the 5.4 series, which includes specialized "mini" and "spark" variants for different performance tiers.

If your workflow depends on a retiring model, you must switch to using Codex with an individual API key. The gpt-5.3-codex-spark model will remain exclusive to Pro subscribers. This change ensures that developers requiring specific legacy behaviors can still access them through programmatic endpoints rather than the simplified web login.
