OpenAI launches zero dollar Codex seats to scale enterprise engineering pilots

OpenAI introduced a pay-as-you-go pricing tier for Codex-only seats within ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspaces. By removing fixed seat fees and rate limits, teams can now launch low-risk AI engineering pilots that scale costs directly with actual token usage.

OpenAI added a flexible pricing option for Codex within its ChatGPT Business and Enterprise plans. Teams can now add "Codex-only" seats with a $0 base fee, providing full access to the Codex app, Plugins, and Automations. These seats have no rate limits and are billed on token consumption.

This shift addresses the friction of fixed licensing costs for specialized engineering tools. With Codex usage growing 6x since January 2026, organizations can now transition from individual experiments to team-wide adoption. Usage-based billing aligns spend with output, allowing managers to track costs across budgets without upfront commitments.

You can now start pilots by adding Codex-only members to existing workspaces or creating a new ChatGPT Business account for $20 per seat annually. Eligible teams can receive $100 in credits for each new member, up to $500. The Codex app is available for macOS and Windows to begin building.
