OpenAI introduced pay-as-you-go Codex-only seats for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise plans, removing fixed monthly fees for technical team members. This shift allows organizations to pilot AI coding tools with no rate limits while lowering the entry cost for broader ChatGPT adoption.

OpenAI introduced usage-based pricing for Codex within ChatGPT Business and Enterprise plans, allowing teams to add members without fixed monthly seat fees. These Codex-only seats are billed on token consumption and operate without rate limits. This provides full access to the Codex desktop application, CLI, and integrated developer tools.

This shift targets the financial friction of scaling AI across engineering organizations. By removing upfront seat costs, companies can run low-risk pilots and expand access based on actual utility. This consumption-based model also offers clearer cost attribution, making it easier for teams to track AI spend against specific budgets.

You can now assign these flexible seats within your workspace or transition to the standard ChatGPT Business plan at a lowered annual price of $20 per user. Eligible workspaces can also claim $100 in credits for each new Codex seat added, up to a $500 total.
