OpenAI Adds Plugins to Codex for Autonomous Engineering Workflow Automation

OpenAI introduced plugins for Codex, its cloud-based software engineering agent. This update allows the agent to interact with external services and data sources previously inaccessible. Users authenticate these plugins using existing ChatGPT credentials, enabling a unified setup process for both the web interface and the Codex CLI.

This shift transforms Codex from a specialized code generator into a broader agentic assistant handling engineering "glue work." By integrating with external tools, the agent can now manage calendars, triage incoming bugs, and aggregate company updates. It bridges the gap between writing code and the operational overhead that slows down development cycles.

You can combine these plugins with skills and automation to create custom workflows, such as generating physical summaries of public discourse. Codex is available on ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Pro plans. Access the agent through the ChatGPT sidebar or run the Codex CLI locally for multi-step repository edits.
