NVIDIA Turns AI Factories Into Flexible Grid Assets

· Updated

NVIDIA and Emerald AI are partnering with AES, Constellation, Invenergy, NextEra Energy, Nscale Energy & Power, and Vistra to turn AI data centers into flexible grid assets. Built on the Vera Rubin DSX platform with DSX Flex software, the collaboration helps AI factories connect to the grid faster while operating as grid-stabilizing assets rather than purely power consumers.

The partnership reframes AI data center power dynamics: instead of competing with existing demand, AI factories can supply flexibility services back to the grid. According to a Duke University study cited in the announcement, power-flexible AI factories could help unlock up to 100 GW of capacity on the existing U.S. power system by combining optimized infrastructure with grid-responsive operations.

The approach uses co-located energy generation and storage as bridge power for hybrid AI factory deployment, with Emerald AI's Conductor platform orchestrating compute flexibility alongside onsite resources to shorten interconnection timelines.
